Dr. Michelle Ananda-Rajah is Australia’s first Tamil Parliamentarian. Born in the UK and raised in Zambia, Michelle brings a unique, intersectional perspective to her work in Australian politics.
As a doctor-scientist specialising in infectious diseases and general physician, Michelle fought for the safety of frontline healthcare workers during the COVID-19 Pandemic. Galvanised by the failings of the Morrison Government to support and listen to health care workers, Michelle, spoke up. Taking on both her profession and the Government she ensured the voice of healthcare workers around the country were heard.
It was this advocacy which exposed Michelle to the deep inadequacies of the former government and propelled her into a life of politics with the Labor Party.
At the 2022 election, Michelle made history as Higgins’ first Labor Member in the seat’s 75-year history. There she brought the same vigour and compassion to championing her constituents’ concerns as she had her patients and colleagues. Helping to ease cost-of-living pressures and build on the electorate’s rich tradition of skills, expertise and moral ambition.
After Higgins’ abolition in 2025, Michelle’s commitment to public service only deepened. Once again making history, securing the third spot on Labor’s Senate ticket in Victoria for the 2025 Federal Election – something not achieved since 2007.
Her vision for a more inclusive, sustainable, and competitive Australia, one that ensures a fair go for all, will shape her work in the Senate for the next six years.
